That was all the excited girl could think of as she stepped onto the train. It was one of those fancy magnet trains that sped up really quickly, went really fast, and slowed down really quickly for another stop, all in about two minutes, tops. Louie felt like she was going to puke from the variable movement, and from the butterflies. She was used to being nervous, but it was like all the butterflies she'd ever gotten in her life and joined together and were now breeding like rabbits. She was sitting next to a business man who was wearing a dark green tuxedo and appeared to be about two hundred pounds overweight. Who made green tuxedos? If all you could afford was green tuxedos, how could you afford to eat that much? She couldn't figure out, but didn't hesitate to flash a nervous grin at the man. It was incredibly rude, but it made her feel a bit better. She wasn't gorgeous herself, but at least she didn't act like she was. The man next to her had pulled out a laptop and was pounding away on the keyboard. Not typing - pounding. Because the computer wasn't loading fast enough. She saw eyes darting to their seat from all over the compartment and it made her uneasy. It took two long, boring hours, but at last, the announcer made the call Louie had been waiting for. "Next stop: The Academy." Louie perked up. She was convinced that this wasn't going to end well, but it would be better than sitting next that man any longer. Once he saw Louie's reaction to the announcement, the man's anger abated. He turned to her, and for the first time, offered up some conversation. "Oh, sweetie, yur not gunna go to that place, are ya? Tha' place is swarmin with ghosties! I hear it fruma friend a mine who used ta live in tho' parts. You'd best not be messin around ova there, not a sweet thang like you." She nodded slowly, her eyes getting wide. She suddenly very much doubted that he was a business man. He sounded more like a farmer from the south, or maybe he was a rapist. Who said "sweet thang" other than rapists? She was now sitting on the edge of her seat, practically begging the train to speed up and get to the school faster. When the train pulled up to the dingy little station, she hopped off the train like she was heading home. Oh, how she wished that were true. Instead, she was going to get her starting pokemon. A cold wind whipped through the air, sending a chill down her spine. Whether it was from the cold or the fear she had of the man that recently sat next to her, she couldn't tell. The cold reality washed over her when the magnet train pulled out of the station. She was alone. If she died right here, no one notice. The fear returned, overtaking her nervousness for the moment. Wanting to get away from that train station, she ran out and caught a cab. It got her to the academy in a matter of minutes, and left her almost completely empty handed - not that it mattered much, since there wasn't a currency there or anything. And in a mere hour of walking in her bare feet, she had attracted quite a bit of attention from the local avians as she pulled out some bread and peanut butter for a pick-me-up snack. The birds had soon fluttered away after discovering that she was going to fight to the death for her meal, but a certain chubby little Pidgey didn't seem to give in so easily. "You're fat." "Piiiiidge~" "Dumb bird, you're not listening. You really need to lay off the biscuits, or you're never going to be able to fly. You're going to have to roll everywhere, and I'm not going to help. I'm going to laugh at you." |
The rotund Pidgey, nestled comfortably against Louie's neck, cheeped happily, having recognized the word "biscuit". The young woman sighed and trudged along, sights set on the various shops lining the road. She was in need of pokeballs and potions and the like -- basic gear for your starting "trainer" that she had failed to recognize as necessary until she realized that, no, she couldn't catch anything new without said capsules. And so, hands in her pockets and some pestering bird on her shoulder, she swaggered her was through the necessary purchases, bare feet slapping on the linoleum floors and drawing more than enough strange looks. (Not like Louie actually cared, mind you, she was successful. Pokeballs? Check.)
A new warm breeze caught her as she exited the last shop, blowing her hair about her face and carrying the sweet scent of new flowers. Louie grinned and unzipped her matte black hoodie -- which in retrospect she hadn't even needed that day -- and hastened to smooth out the newly revealed checkerboard t-shirt which had bunched in a rather unsightly manner about her waist.
"Pi pi pi pidgeeeeeeeey~"
As though inspired by the loveliness of the season (though entirely more likely driven by territorial instincts), the begging bird broke into song, pale tan-and-brown feathers rustling in the wind. Louie subconsciously reached up to pet him, running her fingers through the soft, downy feathers on his belly. "That's very nice," she remarked flatly, pale hazel gaze locked on the sky.
"I need... some more specimens."
The newbie trainer cast around for a bit, grabbing random passers-by and demanding to know "WHERE THE GODDAMN SPECIMENS WERE"... but to no avail. It looked like she was going to have to find them herself.
With an overly dramatic sigh, Louie turned and pranced down the street, interrupting the bird's rather lovely song with her jarring steps. He pecked at her ear in irritation and she laughed; a vibrant, bubbly, barking sound -- "Aw, that's not nice~"
... And then she very nearly ran smack into a fire hydrant.
Side-stepping at the last moment (and almost losing her balance), she managed to get out a gasp before catching her foot on the uneven curb. Entirely losing her balance this time, she fell flat on her face with a muffled oomph.
Louie leapt hurridly to her feet, flinging the pidgey away as to not look entirely stupid, dealing with a feral birdand falling. It managed to get its fat little body off the ground, and flew quickly.
She approached the lonely looking laboratory presented to her as she patted her clothes out; another chill was sent down her spine. The man's words returned to her - "swarmin' with ghosties!" She had thought he was crazy then, but now, she wasn't so sure. This certainly did seem like the type of place ghosts would haunt. The area around her was empty. There were only a few houses in sight and none of them were close to her. She couldn't see any signs of life other than a single yellow window in the lab. If a light was on, somebody had to be home, right?
She walked up to the lab's doors and knocked, although much to her surprise, they easily slid open as if trying to welcome her. She pulled the letter she'd received a few days ago out of her bag. She turned her attention back to the building before her, with the clean white tile floors reflecting her face back at her.
Well, this is it.
