Taking a deep breath, Rixie noted how the sulfuric smells of the volcano had become less offensive as she got used to them. She smiled and let out the deep breath with a soft, contented sigh. Slate stood at her side, as he always did when they were and about. He sniffed the air, happily contemplating their past experiences here. But not all was well in their fiery paradise. A flicker of flame caught Rixie's attention, and she turned sharply. It had disappeared, probably behind some of those thick boulders, but she was sure that it had been from a fire type pokemon! She loved fire types, and excitement rushed through her. "Slate, go on ahead and find that pokemon! Don't let it get away!" Slate barrelled off towards the source of the flames.

Kenso was actually surprised Sleipnir had been willing to come back here. This place had some bad memories circling the Ponyta. But hey, for every courageous battle, there was a memorial, right? Maybe Sleipnir had a metaphoric memorial.
The Ponyta trotted along solemnly. He scanned the area, memories encasing him. He stopped in his tracks. Things were swarming him, too many emotions, so many.... A tear rolled out of the Pokemon's eye. This was too much.
Kenso stepped up next to the poor Ponyta. He wrapped his arms around the Ponyta's neck, hugging him. "They fought valiantly, Sleipnir. I promised you that day that we would get revenge. Don't you ever think I'll break that," he whispered soothingly. The Ponyta shook his head, snapping back to reality.
It was then that Kenso saw Slate. His eyes widened. Was that....? No, it evolved into a Rhydon. That's right. So it couldn't be that same one.
Sleipnir saw the Rhyhorn, too. In a fit of blind rage, he shook free from his Trainer and unleashed a Flame Wheel.
"Sleipnir! NO!" Kenso attempted to cry out. It was too late, and the move was spiraling towards the Rhyhorn. Kenso prayed and prayed that the Pokemon would avoid it.

Slate grunted with surprise as the Flame Wheel came towards him. He ducked his head, unable to really move quickly enough. Luckily, however, it seemed the user of the Flame Wheel had been too hasty to aim very well. Slate jumped back up and growled gently, "Hey, kid. Easy with those Flame Wheels. You can hurt someone." Rixie, who had just turned the corner, gasped with horror. She rushed over to him. Kneeling down, concern in her eyes, she murmured, "Slate! Slate, are you okay?"
He huffed softly into her hair, "I'll be fine. There is no need for alarm." She was not as ready to forgive the mistake as her gentle Rhyhorn was. "You! What do you think you're doing?! You could've hurt him!" Though usually mild and shy, afraid of being exposed to others, Rixie was now completely out in the open, and pissed. "Battle me!" she challenged. And I'll show you for threatening my pokemon like that! I'll show you what it means to be hurt! she seethed inwardly.

"Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa! You got it all wrong!" Kenso said, flailing his arms around. "My Ponyta, Sleipnir, has some bad mojo with this place. Y'see, his parents were killed here, right before his eyes and mine, by a Rhydon. But, his leg was hurt at the time, so I don't think he was at an elevation where he saw it evolve, so all he saw was a Rhyhorn. When your Rhyhorn there came charging down here, I was soothing Sleipnir. This was our first time back since the event, and Sleipnir wasn't taking things well. all he saw was your Rhyhorn, mistook it for the OTHER one, and attacked. Don't be so rash," Kenso said. He panted and attempted to catch his breath. Never had he explained so much in two short breaths.
She seemed pretty pissed. It was just a misunderstanding! This airbag should stop being so narrow-minded. Kenso shrugged to himself.
"Sleipnir, return," he said. The Ponyta retreated back into his PokeBall. "Calm down for now. I'll let you out after the battle," Kenso said.
He reached down towards his belt, reaching for one of his balls. He placed his hand on the one he wanted. "What's a battle if we can't have a little bit of a disadvantage?" he asked.
The Pokemon he was about to release had been with him a long time. He was Kenso's best friend, and Kenso was his. They had been through a lot together, but Kenso had never really put him on his respected pedestal. He knew the chance of evolution was on the horizon for his teammate, so why not bring it closer?
He tossed the PokeBall in the air. The pop rang out once more, and the beams shot towards the ground.
"All right, Bushou! Battle like it's your last day! We're at a disadvantage here, but something tells me we can pull through," Kenso said. The Slakoth turned to Kenso and responded with a curt nod.
"Well, miss. Since you won't listen to reason, maybe I oughta beat you into understanding. Ladies first."

Rixie barely even heard the boy's words. All she could think about was the raging protective-ness for Slate. Slate sighed. He didn't really want to fight over this, but there wasn't much he could do. He watched with a twinge of regret as the trainer let out a Slakoth. But his feelings changed when he heard the trainer's words. He barely understood it, but he got the basic idea. "Won't listen?" "I?" "Beat?" At the word beat, Slate felt a churning flare of anger begin to smolder. Nobody hurt his trainer. "Go on, Slate. Go get that thing with Drill Run!" Slate snorted angrily, pawing the ground. He hardly needed to be told. In an instant, he was charging towards them, moving faster as he gained momentum. When he had gained enough, he spun himself into a twister-like formation, heading straight for the Slakoth!

Kenso sighed. Oh well, at least he tried. "Bushou, dodge and go in with a Faint Attack!" he ordered.
In an attempt, the Bushou began to duck and roll from the Rhyhorn's attack, only to fail. He was hit and sent spiraling back a few feet. He stood up, not letting his injuries get the best of him, and charged towards the Rhyhorn with a claw raised, ready to use Faint Attack.
Bushou wasn't exactly the fastest Pokemon, Kenso knew. At least this move was highly accurate. He prayed and prayed that this battle would end in his favor.

Slate was ready to call it a day when he saw the Slakoth hit the ground, so when it got back up, he growled frustratedly. Rixie narrowed her eyes as the Faint Attack began to come towards him. Knowing that there was no way Slate would have the speed to dodge out of the way in time, she called out to him, "Slate, Bulldoze, now! When the Slakoth gets close enough, hit it with Chip Away!"
Slate instantly reared up as best as he could, like a boulder moving upwards, and slammed both front feet down on the ground in front of him in a Bulldoze, causing the very earth to shake, dealing a fair bit of damage and lowering Bushou's speed by one level. Then, if the Slakoth dared get follow through with the Faint Attack and get closer, he would be ready to strike it over and over again with Chip Away!
