Name: Jael Lee Age: 16 Appearance: There are many things about Jael that can catch the eye almost immediately. However, it is her hair that is her most prized piece of her appearance. She painstakingly dyes dark blue zigzags through the bottom five inches of her hair, which is naturally silver in color, in order to resemble the long tail of the wild zigzagoons she encountered as a child. It is with a near obsessive air that the circus performer cares for her hair.
Surprisingly demure in her clothing choices, Jael is often clad in slimming black outfits, usually with an unusual cut or fringe effect added somewhere. Where she really flares is in the accessories, piling on bright neon scarves and bracelets. Jael has everything from belts, necklaces, rings and hats in a wide variety of colors for her every day life, nearly all of which includes some sort of Mew motif on it, in honor of the Circus she grew up in.
Though under the hair dye and stacked up colors and effects is a rather lovely base. Average height for her age, Jael is 5'4 on a good day, standing with near perfect posture. Blessed with a strong, slender body perfect for any contortionist such as herself, Jael finds her movement graceful and every step is measured and filled with prideful purpose. It is with this natural flexibility and good breeding that Jael made such an excellent circus performer.
Personality: Jael’s time at Cirque du Mew obviously shaped the girl for better or worse. She’s used to the spotlight of the circus, which made normal city life boring to her as a young girl. In order to make her life somewhat interesting, she continued to practice her acrobatic stunts, and would often do handstands or practice tightrope walking in the backyard… it caused her to start introducing herself by her stage name, “the fantabulous Jewel Rae”.
Her outgoing, bubbly nature actually seems to be slightly overwhelming to some people, as they’re not used to a girl whose, in the words of some people around her, just so incredibly strange. Although some people seem to believe that she’s a handful, Jael doesn’t seem to think that she’s all that hard to deal with at all. After all, the people at Cirque du Mew were able to handle her just fine.
Along with her strange behavior come some of Jael’s more ‘normal’ traits. She’s proud and stubborn, almost to a fault. If someone tells her that she just can’t do something, she’s very willing to do everything in her power to prove them wrong. She also tends to argue, especially if she feels as though she’s been slighted. This competitiveness and willingness to argue has caused her several problems in the past with various people, but she takes it all in good stride.
History: It is quite obvious that Jael did not have a normal childhood… at the very least, it’s obvious that she must not have grown up in a small place like Chicole, given her eccentricities.
Jael actually grew up in Cirque du Mew, a humongous traveling circus, where people as well as pokemon were part of the act. It was, and still is, a very popular show, and Jael absolutely enjoyed every minute of their traveling, having gone from region to region in order to bring people their fantastic performances.
Being one of the few children living in the circus meant that Jael was given a ton of liberties… including playing with all of the pokemon, and being spoiled by all of her uncles and aunties. Jael could, and often would, get away with anything.
Being in Cirque du Mew wasn’t all fun and games, as her parents quickly taught her. Her parents urged her to be responsible and help out wherever she could in an attempt to keep their little girl far away from their knife-throwing act and around a much safer act. That was how Jael grew incredibly close to Vladmir DeAngelo, the resident Magician and Acrobat. If asked, Jael would admit that she chose to help Vlad because she loved his performances. At first, Uncle Vlad did not seem to enjoy the company of the little girl, despite his trusty Mr. Mime and Absol taking to her instantly. However, after several weeks of watching her hang around and seeing her watch his preparation for all of his performances, he relented. His pokemon liked her well enough and, following on their instinct, began to prepare her to become his assistant.
After months of working and practicing with Vladmir and his pokemon, Jael was ready to have her debut performance. At the tender age of five, Jael was introduced to the public as Jewel Rae, assistant to Vlad the Magnificent during his magic shows. Her parents were incredibly proud of her, and made sure to congratulate her for a job well done.
Although Vladmir DeAngelo was strict in only allowing Jael to appear with him during his magic shows, he also taught her everything he knew about his acrobatic stunts. It sparked Jael’s obsession with flexibility, and everyone in the circus often found the girl attempting to walk on her hands on several occasions as well as attempting to force her body into strange positions that, for the normal person, looked extremely uncomfortable and rather painful. Mr. Mime, and several other circus pokemon such as Lance Strongo’s Tyrogue, quickly became her practice partners.
Despite having an obvious knack for pokemon, Jael quickly developed an incredibly irrational fear of ghost pokemon. It happened in Ecruteak City, when she was bringing her parents flowers for their debut performance of their new knife throwing routine. On her way to make her delivery, a Banette and a Duskull decided to play several pranks on her… in the end, she screamed so loudly that Vlad’s Absol heard all the way from the main circus tent and came running as fast as he could. Both ghost pokemon fled as quickly as possible, but the damage was done. Being only six at the time, the confrontation killed the image the young girl had for the ghost type. Jael did not want to be near another ghost pokemon—she was even a little wary around the Ringmaster’s Dusknoir.
It was while Cirque du Mew was traveling through Kanto that disaster struck. During one of her parent’s performances, her mother got a nasty wound—a knife to the eye. It was practically a miracle that she survived, but it brought her parents back down to earth. They continued traveling for a time, before deciding that they should settle down and actually get a ‘normal’ job. They tried to break the news gently that they would be moving to Chicole.
Jael did not take it well. She cried and cried, and begged to stay with Uncle Vlad, Mr. Mime and Absol. Her begging and crying got her nowhere, of course. They were moving, whether she liked it or not, and all too soon she had to say goodbye to her best friends and teacher... She spent a good two hours holding onto both Absol and Mr. Mime before she left. The goodbye wasn’t forever, although at the time it felt like it was permanent (after all, she was only eight at the time). Jael’s parents willingly spent the money necessary to fly the young girl and their Ambipom (who only went with her as a safety measure) to Cirque du Mew for extended periods of time in order to allow her to stay close to her ‘roots’, her unofficial family, and to allow her to do what she loved.
Shortly after the move, Jael met Saire at primary school (the concept of an actual school was new to Jael, and during her first day she silently wondered to herself if she would have this mysterious thing called a ‘gym class', and if they would do any acrobatic stunts; she was quickly disappointed). Jael and Saire became fast friends, although Saire didn’t seem to share Jael’s enthusiasm for pokemon… or the circus.
It was during one of her extended stay at Cirque du Mew that Jael became interested in pokemon battles. When she was ten, she had her first battle. Using Vlad’s Absol, she fought master escapist Prisoner B’s newly acquired Ditto. Whether it was luck, a natural talent in pokemon battles, or if B went easy on her (if asked, Jael would violently protest that he went easy on her—Prisoner B is a nice guy, but surely not that nice), she won. Since then, Jael thoroughly enjoyed battling.
She battled the circus performers, she battled random pokemon who wandered near, and she battled any others her age that came by. If Jael had a chance to battle, she took it. She would often battle with Vlad's Absol, who enjoyed training and battling with Jael. While the two made a good team, partly due to Absol’s knowledge of battling from a time before Jael decided she actually wanted to be a trainer, they lost a ‘handful’ of times (and that is all that Jael would be willing to admit), because Jael tended to pick fights with opponents much more experienced than she.
Although she despised losing with every fiber of her being, Jael learned from her losses. It was better to learn from mistakes than to remain ignorant, as Vlad told her after kicking her butt over, and over, and over in an attempt to get through her thick skull. Although gaining good advice, Jael’s memory of it is bittersweet, considering how badly her ass was handed to her.
It was about a year later that she learned about the Academy, and it took another year of convincing to get her to consider going instead of joining the circus right away. With her decision to go solidified, so that she could learn even more about the pokemon she loves so much, Jael did her best to con her best friend into joining her on this adventure of awesomeness.
