Name: Claudia Reed Age: 14 Appearance: Claudia comes off as creepy…unintentionally of course. On a face so young, she has a very serious look to her, rarely smiling or laughing, and big intense gold eyes that stare at you as you walk by. She could be quietly reading one her books (oh, and a book or a notebook always seems to be in her hand) when a person walks by, and she immediately pops her head up and watches them until they leave (And leave, usually to get away from her stare). She’s not trying to be weird, but she is a curious girl who is interested in the way people act. Because of her small height, 4’11”, and silent gait, she seems to just pop up in places at times too. If she could just lighten up, and not be such a serious and studious person, the purplish-brown haired girl would actually be kind of adorable.
Personality: She is a quiet girl. Very serious, studious, and intelligent too. She isn’t one for frivolous play or loud, obnoxious talking. She says very little, the bare minimum, and prefers to only say something longer when she has something very important to say (Oh, and her voice is also monotone! Super appealing!). She comes off as this calm, emotionless girl, but the truth is she just doesn’t know how to interact with people, to show her human side to them. On the inside she is just bubbling with dreams, fears, and certainly many emotions, but she is afraid that if she actually lets herself be open with people they will hurt her…like her mother did. She hates to be laughed at and that was why she decided it was better not to have anyone than to ever feel so horrible again. She doesn’t trust them. So, she is quiet and keeps her interaction with people to a minimum. The dreamer in her, though, imagines what it would be like to be one of those outgoing girls with the long blonde hair and big white smiles…almost wishes she could be them. Then she realizes someone like her…could never be someone like them, even if she tried. Being silent has its perks, most of the time people don’t even notice you’re there. She can slip out and go to places that “normal” people could never be caught in. It also makes it easier to watch people, note what they do, and kind of imagine herself in their shoes. Sometimes, in her head she tries to pretend what it would be like to be friends with them or go on adventures. She’s quite lonely. It’s probably why she reads books so much to escape to a different world for a while. Her loneliness has always made her dream of having Pokemon, a companion. See, she wouldn’t have to talk to a pokemon, and it wouldn’t think she was weird or a freak, it would love her.
History: Claudia Reed’s parents have never hit her. They have never yelled at her or spit at her. Called her names or threaten to hurt her. In fact, they have done very little for their daughter besides the necessities of feeding her, clothing her, and putting a roof over her head. See, Claudia was born as a way to trap Mr. Reed, a wealthy bank owner, to Mrs. Reed, a gold digger. Mrs. Reed saw Claudia as her little insurance policy to make sure he would leave her. Once, she had her, she pretty much handed her to the nanny and went on to spend her money. Mr. Reed? Well, he resented the both of them and would rather spend more time devoted to his work (and mistresses) than his family.
So, Claudia was raised by a variety of different nannies and tutors as she was homeschooled. All very lovely and nice, but none stayed long in the dark and dreary mausoleum of a mansion. In general her life has been rather cold and boring…shaping her into the girl she became, but there were a few notable occurrences that stand out in her mind. Her first ever memory was walking around her house (mansion) at about 3 being totally terrified and frightened of the “haunted” looking place. She remembered crying and crying until finally her mother scooped her up in her arms, told her to hush, and put her back in her bed. That was all she remembered. Then, she remembered the first book she read. It was of a course a kiddie and smaller version of the real tale, but it was Rapanunzel. That day she had started to pretend she was Rapunzel, but it was also the day that sparked her eternal interest in reading. She remembered just a lot of gray in her life so far, but that had been the first time that her world had really been “in color.” She would never stop reading, and it was soon rare to see her without a book in her small hands.
Her life was soon just filled with a lot of reading in their large library. She would spend the first part of her day, doing all of her homework and studying to learn things like the piano and various languages. Then, the rest of the day she would spend reading a book. She finished a different book every day. She loved the old fairy tales, but slowly moved onto the classics. The more she read, the more she started to wonder what it would be like to have her own adventures like in the novels she read. So, she started to venture outside. She had never considered herself a nature girl, but if Sam Gribly could live in the trunk of a tree, she could spend a day in the woods. She was scared, but started to really like it. Soon, she was spending the first half of the day indoors, and then the rest of her afternoon outside: reading, picking flowers, walking around, or stalking watching the people that walked past her house.
At eleven, another great event happened. One day, while reading Little Women under a big oak, she was approached by a pokemon. She had never really been up close to one before - sure she saw the tailow fly in sky and reading the children’s books about some of them - but this was a first. It was brown with zig-zagging marks. They just stared at each other for a while. For some reason, Claudia reached out her hand, and he came to it and sniffed her hand and wagged it’s tail. Then she pet him, and he licked her face. She didn’t know how to really be friendly, awkwardly petting his head, but she had never felt more happy. She was sad to leave, but she hoped to see the pokemon, which she later found out was a zigzagoon, again, but she came back the next day and the next day and he never came back. She was disappointed, but it started her obsession with learning all about pokemon - what people could do with them, the different species, their types, and their moves.
At twelve, the incident with her mother happened. They were having dinner in the large dining room. Usually it was a quiet affair, unless her mother was on the phone or a friend was over, and today was no difference. Claudia was used to the silence. She usually never said much anyway. She generally liked it, but her mother broke the silence, “What are you thinking about?” her mother asked, a hint of concern in her voice. The question brought little Claudia out of her own thoughts…had her mother actually wondered what was on her mind? She opened her mouth, and suddenly words were pouring out. She couldn’t stop. She told her mother how she met a zigzagoon in the forest, how it was amazing, and how she loved pokemon and that all she could think about was pokemon and how she only wished to be a trainer with her whole heart. There was an awkward silence in the room, until her mother’s ugly shrieking laughter filled the room. “Pokemon? Those vile things? You want to train them? I thought you were a smart girl…obviously those tutors have taught you nothing.” She continued to laugh, and Claudia fled to her room. It broke any trust she could have in people. If she had to trust anyone, it would be the characters in her book.
She had decided she was going to run away, all the great literary character did it. She had read about a pokemon academy. How it could teach her all about pokemon. That was where she had to go, but she wouldn’t ask her parents. So, for the next two years, she just started to steal from them. Not only was she saving up for her dream, but in a way she was spiting her parents by taking a decent amount of money from them each week (but not enough for them to notice). By the time she was fourteen, she had a lot of money. Forging her parents name on the contracts, she took off leaving a note that said “Goodbye.”
She is ready to finally live…even if she doesn’t really know how.
