Mkay, this is an idea that I've presented on the box a couple of times but was told to go ahead and put it here. Here we go.
The idea is for a class that is all about crafting custom or original pokeballs as you please. The class would offer all the materials for basic pokeballs and all the tools to make them. Apricorns would be the first thing you learn to make them from of course but as you go on you get to making them out of whatever you want.
Now, I've already run into a few universal problems with the idea in general with people calling it abuse-able. It kinda is but it kinda isn't at the same time. If you're just making regular pokeballs then you're still stuck to the 5 per thread. Making anything greater and you need to fin your own materials which would be a thread or two of putting all of that together. For custom looks that's again your own material and even putting them together. Each ball that does something over a normal pokeball would be judged by mods and a proper course of action taken. It could range from needing 1 thread for material harvesting and 1 thread for creation of a single great ball (if deemed right) all the way to 100 threads for a master ball or something.
Now, the way I'd enjoy seeing it being able to be done is with possible pokeballs that do what no other ball to date does. Perhaps having a rather top end ball that actually increases the defenses of some pokemon that cost like 30 threads to make or something, I dunno. That's all up to staff. But the idea itself is cool.
As a final, please do this. I don't see it being horridly abuse-able and even making things fun outside just catching and raising pokemon (which is still awesome).

Yeah, I don't think master balls will be allowed even if you do a million threads :P Not to mention Sliph Co. seems to have some secret way of making them and I don't think a student would just stumble upon it.
You can have more then 5 per thread, you just can't take more then 5 for free.
The problem with that is that we don't actually use stats. There's no way to properly gauge the increase.
All in all, I like the idea of being able to do this. The class mentioned should be the tech class, since it covers poke technology. Since Tom, who plays the Tech teacher, is a mod, he could say whether it works out or not. Anyway, that's my two cents. :P

Those were just examples I was throwing out there. Actual details would be worked out on the fly or when required. As it stands, I posted this here to get other popular opinions on it. I personally wouldn't mind having my character Chi found the class and build off the tech class to make it work as she wants it. Main reason, it really wouldn't be limited to Apricorns but nearly any material anyone wanted to make it from.

Yeah, I'm pretty much in the "abusable" and disagree pile. In my opinion this is far too much of a system pulled out of an online multiplayer game, something like Runescape. You take materials from the environment, make them fancier somewhere, then craft them into something you can actually use (trading items pretty much goes hand in hand with this). Making your own Pokeballs as a part of class, maybe, but.... going out and actually smacking a rock wall with a pickaxe as your "Metal" supply slow rises IC sounds like the most unfun thing I can think of. Not to mention actually having this system means we need to create a plethora of "craft items" like metal, as well as "rare items" you can also find, and regulate how what can be crafted with what to make ___. Crafting is exceedingly complex and Pokemon pretty much hasn't had any of it save Kurt's Apricorn-balls, and even that you just give it to him and he does all the work. I'm not sure how we'd even explain successful crafting IC, if Kurt has been doing it all his life, wouldn't it take students who have never tried it before at best weeks, at worst years to make a working Pokeball from nothing? Honestly, I find Pokeballs are relatively large waste as well; unless you pick fights with things way out of your league you can ususally manage the same with a basic free Pokeball. After all, on PA if you can faint something, you'll probably capture it. That's not to say others won't want better stuff but people like me will more likely than not manage with stock Pokeballs. But that's just me I'm unlikely to buy Store-stocked balls either. But no, I don't find this a good idea personally, especially the actually going out to find materials part. If I wanted to spent hours at a time digging in a dirt for Iron ore, or combine my Bronze Shield + 3 Steel to make a Steel Shield, I'd go play Runescape or something. Doesn't seem to fit Pokemon very well IMO. Sounds harsh I know, sorry about that.

I’m really going to have to say the horizons need to be broadened a little but and maybe explored before a 100% no can effectively come out of anyone at this point. I know you’re looking at this as making this into runescape or something and in some ways it is and other’s it is not. But in my personal opinion the actual going out and finding material part could really b a side thing or even the main event with other things thrown in. It’d offer another possibility for people who want to go deep and hardcore into it to have to traverse to the deepest levels of gravity mountain on the hunt for this rare ass ore that I want to turn into a ball that is special and only mine for my absolute favorite pokemon for all epicness and awesomeness around.
As far as the abusable part of it all I really have to say that’s an unfair statement because if nothing is ever given a shot anything can be abusable. One could claim that the knockout rule is a super abusable thing because you could send out 5 pokemon and slaughter this one pokemon and right before death actually sets it just capture it even if you really had no chance of catching that pokemon normally. What keeps it from being abused as such is moderator imput and limitations. (A better example would be the chaining moves system) Anything can be taken and overdone, that’s why mods exist.
With the requirement of the needing a large list of craftable stuff I’d say have a basic list and what it needs and then take things other people want in stride. It’s not a bad thing to have a dynamic and fluid moving system working, it just needs to have an eye kept over it. From what I’ve seen of this site so far the mods are really a kind set and if it came down to it I’d monitor it myself and be fair with admin and mod supervision as needed.
The class thing taking a while to actually make successful items, yeah that’s kinda a standard issue. You’d have to have a thread requirement of actually attempting and otherwise doing the craft before even attempting the next stage up. It offers another way characters can grow instead of just as trainers or breeders. Having variety and welcoming all kinds is what keeps things fun and seriously interesting. Heck, I got hooked in on the kindness of the people here, imagine getting a lot more people that come with all kinds of ideas. Boards grow and become ever more awesome that way.

I suppose I could see the charm in this... going on a mission to find and maybe even create something great for your pokemon and watching it gradually become a reality, spanning over multiple threads. It'd be a great way to add arcs.... But. The whole point of those deep, dark places (such as the last block of the Gravity Cave) is that in order to venture here, you have to be strong enough to take the dangers that will be found there. Doesn't this seem sort of... elitest? and exclusive? As for the whole making-pokeballs-that-are-better-than-normal-pokeballs thing... I disagree with it in general. It's too... broken. (And some people *cough*laz*cough* already have OP'd, broken pokemon) Personally, I wouldn't mind doing these kinds of things... heading up the mountain to find some kinda special colored stone... but purely for aesthetics. Maybe I just want a pokeball that looks like a normal rock... but I don't want it to have any fancy +defence shiz about it. (Like I said, purely aesthetics)... That way, it's not such a big deal/causes problems with elitism and broken-ness.

Perhaps I'm a bit of an elitist and I'm sorry. If people want it to be purely for aestheticism then I'm fine with that in general. As far as going out and finding the rare metals in the harder to traverse areas. . . . . That's kinda the point. It's harder and the stuff there is of better quality. I don't see that being broken and elitist at all.

see...while I do like the idea of being able to create custom Poke Balls, it just seems like it'd be more trouble than it's worth. Especially with the whole "going out to gather materials" deal you have planned. assuming we okay something like this, we'd have to come up with lists of materials, potential effects they'd have, what they can be combined with and how that would affect what they do for the ball, where/how to find them, etc.
We've got enough going on as it is, and we simply don't have the time to work on something so potentially extensive just for the sole purpose of adding a class that could easily be a part of the Technology class. Like I said, I like the idea of custom Poke Balls itself, but not the whole Minecraft aspect of it.
As far as it being broken/easily abused, I disagree. I'm sure there are a number of ways to prevent it from becoming broken. But, my major issue with the idea remains. Sorry, but I just don't see it happening...at least not without heavily simplifying it.

The broken part is the stuff like mentioned above: adding to stats etc. And I'm not even sure how ultra balls are going to be in the shop seeing how they can pretty much instantly capture any pokemon you find. I'd call that broken: being able to just walk out and nab any pokemon you find as soon as it appears.
But, I still like the idea of wandering around on a multithread (5/10-ish?) quest, and rewarded with something that's (not too powerful) but shows you've bonded with your pokemon. I guess it would mostly be character developement. I think I said

Like I said, the stat boosting part and whatnot can be thrown out the window if it's too taboo. My main thing is I really like the character development and the multi-thread or mega thread quest possibilities here. I've always loved that stuff.
As far as actually getting materials and effects and whatnot, I can handle all that. I've had MORE than enough experience in crafting stuff and I've actually dabbled in recreational blacksmithing a bit myself. I'm by no means a master but I can make real metals and stuff to make shit work. Like I said, I love doing this kind of thing. I love making stuff and watching it grow and molding it to my liking. I even really enjoy working within some restraints, mainly because I find ways of breaking them or just enjoy being restrained in some situations. ;P . If the problem is workload, I'll take that off your hands and do it myself.
