Arrival
And so it was time. Time to head off to the Pokémon Academy. She was starting late, as school would have started by now, but she was told that would be fine. Apparently classes started later then usual and began only recently. To think how much money must be spent on funding a place like this, and the faculty couldn't bother to keep things running smoothly, it was ridiculous. She hoped their ability to teach surpassed their punctuality. If not this place was going to be a huge waste of time. She would have better success traveling on her own. But she wanted to do things right, so giving the place a try was important. Also, she wasn't too worried about arriving late. Her parents had gone through a lot of trouble to get her in and had made sure that the teachers would be informed of the late arrival.
The limo pulled up to the station of the monorail that led to the island. The driver got out of the front and walked down along the car to open the back door. Once open, a pretty red haired teen out one foot out, then the other. She rose and looked around. The ocean's smell filled the air and she could see the island the academy resided upon in the distance. She pulled some of the hair that was blowing in her face out of the way and let out a sigh. This girl was Autumn Lugria, a veritable princess in the high society world. Her parents were not with her though, she expected no more from them. They were too 'busy' with whatever to waste time driving down to the station to see her off when a simple 'have fun' was good enough. Perhaps this was why she wasn't feeling any nerves for being away from home for the first time in her life. Because she had been alone for a long time now.
The driver had removed her things from the car, so Autumn turned away from the scenery. She picked up her luggage and walked off without a word to the driver. In fact, she hadn't said a word to him the whole trip. Her luggage was some of what she needed, the basic stuff. The rest would be sent to her later by mail. She couldn't carry it all by herself, after all. Autumn walked up to the station where she now had to wait for the transport. A man was sitting near by, an elderly one. He seemed pretty comfortable where he sat, as if he did so often. Autumn ignored him, but he watched as she walked up. Then he rose and walked over to her. With a friendly look.
"So you've been accepted into Pokemon Acad-" he began. But as he spoke Autumn flashed him a death glare that faltered his words. She looked like she was ready to gut him if he continued talking to her. And perhaps she was, Autumn did have little patience for perverted old men trying to be friendly with her. The old man backed off and returned to his seat. Autumn's gaze returned to waiting for the train and gave the old man no further attention. The train arrived and Autumn stepped aboard it.
She sat down in a seat, her posture perfect, her hands in her lap. She closed her eyes and blocked everything out. An attendant welcomed her aboard, but Autumn never even opened her eyes to acknowledge the woman's presence. The train eventually left and headed off for the island. About time. Autumn never moved from her position the whole trip. One might think she actually fell asleep sitting up. Her first sign of life only happened as the train pulled into the station. Her eyes opened again, she picked up her things, and walked out. Ignoring everyone as usual.
She stepped off the train and looked around. There were signs pointing toward the lab, the place she had to go. Her mind immediately recalled the map that had come with the instructions. She had it in her pocket, but it was unnecessary. Her memory was sufficient enough to know where the lab was once she had her bearings of the island. She headed off along the path. It wasn't to far from the station, the lab. A convenient placement considering that was the first place people were to go. At least there was something around here they did right. Along the way, Autumn saw some Spearow in a sign, squawking away. It brought her mind to Pokémon, and her thoughts returned on a frequent subject they had gone over a lot as of late. What Pokémon would she be working with? Not knowing made it harder to prepare. But she supposed that was part of the training. She should be okay though, she was prepared.
Arriving at the building, she found an odd sight. The door looked like it had been damaged and replaced. Was the building attacked or something? It looked like the door had been blown off, what could have caused that? Shaking her head, Autumn pushed the door open, the grind of the hinges screeching a bit, and entered the building. It looked as one would expect a lab to look. Clean. Autumn walked into what looked like a waiting room that was completely empty at the moment. With another sigh, she placed her things down and took a seat in one of the chairs. She wondered just how long she would have to wait around for someone to show up. Well, whatever. She wasn't exactly in a rush. Closing her eyes, she once again sat with perfect posture, hands in her lap, listening for a sound as she remained aware and meditative.

"Gotta get back to swing of things I guess."
Tao mumbled as he entered the recently re-opened Test Area. It hasn't been touched for months since the people have been busy conducting a meeting among the other Head Masters of the other Pokemon Academies for the possible upcoming School War. By War, Tao meant mostly about a friendly competition between schools to strengthen the sense of camaraderie between the students and get them an experience they will never forget once they do decide to leave the school.
Grabbing a pair of pokeballs from the spare Cart set up there, Tao saw the red haired girl and was faintly reminded of one of his students. With a shrug of his shoulders, remembering the application that was sent to his office, Tao procured a random index card from a machine and on it, 5 moves were already printed on it for the pokemon that the student was gonna use.
"Rank Test. Here's an Index Card. You get first move."
Tao stated as he threw the Venusaur Pokeball at the Student, lobbing it to at least make sure she could catch the thing. Throwing his to the ground, a Serperior appeared and had started to slither around the Test Area, which was basically just a flat room.

Test
As it turned out, Autumn didn't have to wait to long. Only a couple of minutes had passed when she heard the sound of someone entering the room and muttering to himself. Autumn opened her eyes to find an odd looking man. Not that she cared how he looked, he could do as he pleased. But he was certainly differing from the norm. What exactly were those black things coming out of his head? Anyway, that wasn't all that important to her. What was important was passing this test. The instructor gave her an index card and tossed her a pokéball. She caught the ball, then looked at the card. She had a Venusaur with five moves - Poison and Sleep powder, growl, leech seed, and solar beam. All pretty basic stuff, except Solar beam which was one of the best grass moves there was.
The instructor sent out his pokémon - a Serperior - and told her she had the first move. Autumn thought back to her research - Venusaur was a Grass/Poison type, she knew. She also knew Serperior was a grass type, but didn't remember if he had a second type. At any rate, the grass on grass match up meant that Solar beam's damage would be cut and Leech seed was useless altogether. Poisoning was her only other damage output, but sleeping might be more useful. Growl would be important too, because all of Serperior's special attacks were probably grass, and it would have to use any possible physical non-grass moves. Growl weakened them.
"Alright then..." she muttered, then threw the pokéball out to the little arena. With a flash of light, the Venusaur appeared, "Venusaur, use growl then sleep powder!" she commanded. The Venusaur let out it's growl at the opposing Serperior, then launched a seed from the flower on it's back. The seed flew over the Serperior and exploded, raining a powder down over it.

"Elementary."
Tao commented as he gave the student a degrading and pity filled look as the Serperior had the audacity to yawn at the pathetic order that the student gave. Even if that Venusaur was his best friend whenever they were outside, the two of them knew that following anyone who wasn't Tao was basically a waste of time.
As the sleep powder flew towards the Serperior, it had enough sense to slither the hell away without needing an order from its Trainer. With that done, the Serperior looked at the indifferent Venusaur. They both didn't care what was gonna happen next.
"Coil."
Tao ordered as the Serperior followed its Master's orders. The green snake like pokemon coiled itself, boosting its attack, defense and accuracy all in one go. As it stayed in that position, Serperior tightened its self and coiled once more; thus increasing its attack, defense and accuracy by another stage.
"I would have expected better from someone of your pedigree."

Test
Really? She's given 5 basic moves, one of which doesn't even work, and gets insulted when she uses them? This test seemed more designed to boost this idiots ego more then anything else. Who started full force anyway? That was a good way to show your opponent everything you have and capitalize. She needed to feel the opponent out. She now knew it could use Coil, which hurt her a lot. Coil countered her growl, thus rendering it almost completely useless. That hindered two moves on her list of five now. And of the remaining three, two were powder attacks and the third was a charging move that required time. There was nothing here to create a concrete strategy around, it was all about throwing scraps together and hoping for the best. An odd sort of test, it didn't rate knowledge, but your ability to think on the fly. A useful thing to have yes, but hardly the entire picture of a Pokémon battle.
At any rate, she needed to try something else. His insults gained no outward reaction from her, if he wanted to degrade himself with petty words that was his business. She was more worried about winning.
"Scatter sleep powder around it." she commanded. The Venusaur launched three seeds this time, one at the Serperior, and one at each side of it. They exploded all around, casting the sleep power in a wider range. Due to it being coiled, it would have a harder time moving it's long body out of the way this time.

"Leaf Storm."
Tao ordered without a loss of beat to his step. As the scattered Sleep Powder had begun to surrounded the Serperior, the serpent like pokemon had began to spin around itself. Glowing green leaves of energy surrounding it as it began to spin faster and faster, becoming the eye of the storm so to speak.
With the power behind this attack, the Sleep Powder would more or less scatter and become useless sooner rather than later. With the power behind the attack, Serperior had began to rise to the air, a hurricane of leaves following his trail as the serpent kept spinning in mid air. With a vicious spin, the Leaf Storm was then directed towards the Venusaur. As the attack flew, the Serperior could feel itself being drained, it's Special Attack being lowered by two stages from that move.
Relentless and fierce, despite the loss, the Serperior had swung its entire body around, the end of its tail growing a malicious green. The wave of the energy shaping it to look like some kind of sword. Cycling towards the Venusaur, the Serperior had attempted to slash its friend, with no remorse, with Leaf Blade, an attack that had an increased critical ratio.

Test
The Serperior used leaf storm to blow the sleep powder away from it. It made quite a show of it too, forming the tornado, then floating in the air. Autumn wasn't going to waste the time though.
"Growl at it fiercely!" she commanded the Venusaur as Serperior rose into the air. The Venusaur prepared for the attack, growling heavily and long at it (Growl x2). The blast of leaves flew forward toward Venusaur.
"To the left!" The Venusaur shifted right, then threw it's body to the left. The cyclone hit the ground to it's right. The Serperior followed quickly, preparing a Leaf Blade. Apparently it was attacking at will, unless this guy had some sort of silent command structure he was using. She could attempt another dodge, but Venusaur wasn't exactly fast. It might be able to get out of the way, but it would accomplish nothing. Instead she waited. The Leaf Blade hit Venusaur. Now was time to make her move.
"Sleep powder!" she commanded again. Serperior was still in the process of finishing it's attack, and was in close range. Perfect moment to attack. Luckily, Venusaur had a double resistance to grass attacks, so it was easy for it to shrug off the Leaf Blade. The seed launched out, exploded, and sprayed the powder forward at the Serperior.

"Serperior, Return."
Tao ordered as he raised the pokeball. The red light zapping the snake like creature back into its confines as the Venusaur shot the spores. With a grim frown on his face, Tao pulled out three objects from the nearest cabinet.
"Twas a pity you didn't notice anything different about the Venusaur. Here's a Yellow Belt for your effort though and three choices for who you want to be your starter."

Gastly Performance
Hmm? Was that it? Autumn stared a bit blankly in confusion. They weren't battling to the end? Autumn still felt like she had more to prove. And she felt she could have won that battle. The instructor informed her that she had failed to notice something different about the Venusaur. Autumn looked over at the large Pokémon. What had she failed to notice? This was her first time even seeing a Venusaur in real life and it didn't look any different from it's picture from what she could tell. What was she missing?
The instructor picked up three pokéballs and told her to choose one, along with handing her a yellow belt. Yellow rank, huh? Autumn was disappointed with herself, she knew she could do better then that. She looked away from the belt to the pokéballs. Shuckle, Snubbull, or Gastly. Hmph, hardly a choice. Shuckle was only useful if you needed something to take a few hits while you healed your other Pokémon or whatever. Support only, not something that can really be used as a starter. Snubbull was better, but very basic. Best for a complete newbie who needed something easy. Gastly on the other hand was a good choice. Weak defenses maybe, but strong and fast. Plus it had three immunities and three resistances, two of which were doubled. It's lower defenses could make it harder for those who didn't know what they were doing to be successful with it. Autumn was not one of those people. She reached out and took the Gastly's Pokéball.
"Tell me," she said after taking it, and looking up at the instructor, "What was it I missed?"
