the sun had set only a mere 45 minutes before ava crashed through the house, throwing clothing onto the floor and reaching into drawers for even more. her mother stood at the doorframe of her room, admiring her daughter run about the house. she was sixteen and excited about beginning school. why should she interrupt her? soon, the young girl began to tire and her movements became slower and she had reached a near sluggish pace.
"mom, i must figure out exactly what i'll be wearing when i meet my lifelong partner. these things don't happen each and every day. they happen once. so, you must look your best," ava's voice escaped her mouth in a low whisper, chased by a yawn. her mother's eyes held laughter as she rounded her daughter into her arms, and carried her into her own room, laying her onto her bed so that she might finally rest.
"ava, sweetie, it's nearly a three day train ride. you'll have plenty of time to decide what you wish to where for your testing and your first encounter. i'm also sure that your father will tell me all about it when he returns. it's time for some sleep now. so no more rummaging through the house," her mother kissed her forehead and flicked the light off, heading out of the room.
falling into a deep slumber, ava was able to obtain a few hours sleep before she was pulled from bed and her things were packed into a large trunk. actually, a few large trunks. the sun hadn't even risen over her house when she was driven down the driveway towards the train station. her fathe had insisted the three day train ride instead of the overnight ride by boat. her parents had always been the type to let their children experience life along the way.
awake on the train the next morning, ava began speaking to her dad in a rushed tone. he excitement had been building since she had agreed to attend the academy.
"dad, where do i go when i get there?" her eyes turned intense and all-of-a-sudden very serious.
with a slight chuckle he replied, "to the lab. there you will have your testing done for your dorm and you'll select your beginning pokemon. most likely the one you'll be with for a very long time. make sure you choose wisely."
her blonde hair draped her shoulders when she peered outside of the window, seeing the land speed past. "i will. i've read and listened to numerous kids about their first encounters with pokemon. although, most kids get their starters at age twelve, i feel confident i'll do well...right?"
her father only nodded, giving her an assuring smile. no more questions were asked along the way. the next two days slipped through their fingers and finally, the whistle squealed that it was time to take the walk of truth. with trunks rolling behind, she let her small feet carry her onto the cobblestone walkway, letting her stare up at what was about to become everything she'd dreamt of.
"is it okay to feel like i'm going to faint?" she recieved no response as her father followed behind her up the walk. reaching the doors, she forgot all sense of manners. ava burst through the doors and stood on the marble, her eyes in a daze while her body was in a trance. a sign hung above her head a few feet down, reading "laboratory". she didn't even wait for her father before scurrying off through the door.
